Tenerife - the centre of the Canary islands
The largest island of the archipelago, Tenerife is only a four hour flight from most European
countries and an ideal destination for a memorable stay. Many residents coming from different
countries give evidence of this fact. The time difference to the Central European Time (CET)
is minus one hour.
Tenerife towers over its neighbours with the 3718 m (12198 ft) Pico del Teide, Spain´s highest
peak. The island has a surprising geographic diversity resulting in a multitude of microclimates
and makes the island a micro-continent.
Thirty municipalities are located on 2036 square kilometres having a variety of micro- climatic
weather zones and also various animal and plant species, some of them unique in the world.
Tenerife is known as “the island of eternal spring” and offers numerous bays and beaches
where you can enjoy wonderful weather in one of the world´s most delightful climates. The
minimum and maximum annual average air temperatures in Tenerife are about 18°C in winter
(January) and 25°C in summer (August). The average water temperatures are about 18°C in winter
and 23°C in summer- depending on the coastal area.
Folklore: One of the most spectacular event takes place in February, the annual "Mardi Gras"
Carnival at the capital city Santa Cruz, the second largest in the world. The absolute festival
highlight is “the Burying of the Sardine” on Ash Wednesday. In traditional arts and crafts
pottery is the oldest handcraft.
